‘You don’t need to save the world but you do need to
make a difference’

Many of our daily activities use fossil fuels like gas, oil and coal to produce energy.  These create various greenhouse gases – with carbon dioxide being the primary gas emitted through human activities. Scientists have identified these greenhouse gases as the cause of global warming. This warming and changing of the climate is having an adverse effect on our people and our planet.  Each of our activities has a carbon footprint: From the fuel we put in our car, the oil, gas or coal we use for cooking and keeping our homes warm or cool,  to the  buses, trains and planes we travel on. We all know that flying is the quickest and most convenient way to travel but it does have a negative effect by producing carbon. One way to reduce this footprint is to participate in a carbon offset project.

What is a Carbon reduction project?

Carbon reduction projects allow companies or individuals to offset an activity that produces carbon emissions – flying being one of the highest. It’s about funding projects that help reduce carbon emissions by a measurable and verifiable amount. Without the extra ‘carbon finance’ from people or organisations offsetting their emissions, these projects would not happen.

These projects help to combat global climate change as well as caring for local communities. In many instances providing much needed employment, health improvement, biodiversity, reforestation and broad social benefits to impoverished communities.

For every kilogram of carbon dioxide you release into the atmosphere, you can fund an environment-friendly project whose activities displace that amount of released carbon dioxide. The projects also contribute to the preservation and rehabilitation of the environment.

Our Carbon Offset Initiative

When you make a reservation at one of the Mantis Collection properties, you’ll receive a confirmation letter which will provide you with an option to offset the carbon footprint of your trip.  It is optional but we hope that you will consider supporting a small community-based project. Although the carbon offset from our projects is not independently verified, due to prohibitive verification costs, the carbon calculation is  conducted  according to the GHG Protocol.  This is the most widely used greenhouse gas accounting system in the world; and the associated costs reflect the South African carbon tax prices per tonne of carbon dioxide emitted.

The upside: You are not only offsetting your carbon footprint in a community based project  but you will also be able to visit  a project at one of the Mantis properties.

Who we are

Community Conservation Fund Africa (CCFA)  is a registered, Non-Profit Company (NPC), founded by Accor Hotels and the Mantis Collection.  As part of a global hospitality group and the official ‘Foundation’ of the Mantis Collection, we are committed to safe and responsible tourism.  Our goal is to create a conservation legacy through projects that protect the environment while empowering and supporting communities.

CCFA is a fundraising and grant-giving organisation that encourages the growth and conservation of ecosystems that support cohabitation between humans and wildlife.

It is the first NPC to have strategically collaborated with three other non-profit entities, to form a value aligned conservation community: African Parks, Tusk Trust and the Wilderness Foundation. CCFA has a footprint in seven African countries with a key focus in Southern Africa.
